The Kentuckians def Waldo Von Erich - Karl Von Brauner
Initially The Kentuckians replace Bill Watts - Billy Red Lyons in a Best of 5 Falls Match against Von Erich - Von Brauner. The titles were stripped from them until they defeated the former champions in a decisive manner.
“They also had a long feud with Waldo Von Erich and Kurt Von Brauner over the U.S. tag titles. In a strange angle, Von Erich and Von Brauner were scheduled to defend against Cowboy Bill Watts and Billy "Red" Lyons in Oklahoma City in a 3 out of 5 fall match. Watts won the first fall. The Germans won the second fall and in the process injured Lyons where he was unable to continue. The ref allowed Watts to pick another partner to finish the match and Watts picked Grizzly Smith. The Germans won the third fall and Watts was too injured to continue. Now Smith was allowed to pick a new partner and he chose Luke Brown. Smith and Brown won the fourth and fifth falls to win the belts. It was announced on television the next week that because of the substitutions, the belts were being returned to the Germans. This led to title matches around the horn for Smith and Brown where they won the belts.”
